Board hears and moves forward on inclusive athletics: Special Olympics MOU approved; hockey coop discussed

The Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Special Olympics Michigan to launch the Unified Champion Schools program across district sites for 2024–25. The MOU enumerates roles for the district and Special Olympics, includes equipment and training commitments, requires data reporting and background checks for personnel with more than limited contact with students, and contemplates a financial award to help defray program costs for the initial term (Aug. 2024–June 2025). The MOU requires the district to select a staff Liaison, secure facilities, recruit general education students as partners and leaders, and provide program participation data as requested.
Separately, Athletic Director Don Watchowski presented an informational discussion about a proposed MHSAA cooperative agreement with Livonia Clarenceville High School for varsity ice hockey. Watchowski said Clarenceville’s inclusion would add roster depth and that Novi would remain the primary school. The materials included the MHSAA handbook guidance, application, and deadlines; Board discussion was informational and the item will return with a formal recommendation and required approvals.
The Special Olympics MOU was placed on the consent/action list for approval; the hockey cooperative remains under discussion with a planned return for a vote after the required application and league approvals.
