Comal County proclaims June 2025 Elder Abuse Awareness Month; APS shares local intake and investigation figures

The Comal County Commissioner’s Court adopted a proclamation June 12 recognizing June 2025 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month. The court read findings that elder abuse affects thousands across Texas and specifically noted a statewide estimate that more than 120,000 older adults and people with disabilities were affected in 2023. Commissioner Leacock moved to approve the proclamation and Commissioner Webb seconded; the court approved the proclamation by voice vote.
After the proclamation, an Adult Protective Services representative addressed the court and thanked commissioners for the recognition. The speaker said, "Here in Comal County, we approximately have 45,000 residents who are aged 65 and older or adults with disabilities. In 2024, Comal County alone received 717 intakes on reports on allegations related to abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Out of those intakes received, APS here in Comal County completed 513 investigations." The speaker emphasized partnerships with probate courts, the district attorney’s office, New Braunfels Police Department and the Comal County Sheriff’s Office to protect and support older adults.
