The Royal Independent School District presented a budget-to-date update at its April 13 meeting showing the district has closed the projected 2025–26 budget deficit and currently does not anticipate needing a fund-balance draw at the end of the fiscal year.
"This has significantly improved the financial health of the district and will allow the district to look at how to continue to take care of team members, through raises and increasing medical contributions," Superintendent Dr. Pape said in the update. Administrators credited a combination of staff attrition, restructuring, non-payroll reductions, a spending freeze and district growth for the improvement. Dr. Pape also noted prior shortfalls of roughly $1.8 million and $2.6 million and said an earlier projection had the deficit near $4 million, which could have been $5–6 million when including recapture payments.
The presentation was made by CFO Mrs. Bishop and placed the district's current financial posture as improved compared with recent years. No formal board action was required on the update; it was provided as part of the meeting's presentation items and will inform budgeting conversations ahead of the new fiscal year.
