SONORA ISD trustees certify unopposed May 2 election candidates and cancel election

The SONORA ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept certification of unopposed candidates for the May 2, 2026 trustee election and to adopt an order cancelling the election.
Superintendent Michael Kissire told trustees the races were uncontested and recommended accepting certification. "the certification of unopposed candidates for the May 2, 2026 election should be accepted," Mr. Kissire said. Trustee Colby Bates moved to accept certification, and Tai Araujo seconded; the vote was 5–0 with two members absent (John Jones and Brenda Mungia).
Following certification, trustees adopted the formal order cancelling the election because there were no contested races. Mason Martinez moved for cancellation and Colby Bates seconded; the motion carried unanimously. The board recorded the official vote counts in the meeting minutes and took no public comments during the action.
