County selects contractor for animal control facility; projected cost $850,000

Commissioner John Moody reported the buildings-and-grounds committee has selected Jeremy Bender of Bender Builders as the contractor for a new county animal control facility and asked the board to place the item on the County Board of Commissioners (BOC) agenda in two weeks for a contractor presentation and possible approval. Moody said the facility would be approximately 4,600 square feet and that the projected total cost for construction, driveway and related work is about $850,000.
"The animal control facility is going to be about a 4,600 square foot state of the art animal control facility, and our projected total cost for the construction of this facility, driveway, and everything is gonna be $850,000," Moody said. He explained that ordering materials promptly would shorten the construction schedule and that the contractor is confident the project could be completed by the end of the year if approvals and procurement proceed quickly.
Commissioner Gary Heberling and others noted ARPA set‑asides and committee work that supported the effort; Moody said county staff will work with the City of Sandusky on property ownership and related documentation prior to bringing the contract forward. The board did not vote on the project at the March 18 meeting; Moody requested placement on the next BOC agenda for an in‑person presentation by the contractor and a potential approval vote.
