Lake Como to remain with Belmar EMS, mayor says

Mayor Higgins told the Borough of Lake Como council on March 18 that he recommends the borough continue its shared-service arrangement with Belmar for emergency medical services, saying Belmar provides reliable coverage for residents.
"Belmar’s current response time is three minutes or less and he is proud to be staying with EMS Director Rob DeMartin and his crew who are stationed right next to Borough Hall," Mayor Higgins said, arguing that response reliability is a key factor in the recommendation. He said two towns left the previous four-town agreement in December, which lowered Lake Como's contribution to the shared service.
The mayor said the recommendation will be forwarded to the Emergency Services Committee for consideration; no formal council vote on a contract change occurred at the March 18 meeting. He also said there may be a future countywide EMS option, but that the borough currently relies on Belmar to meet residents' needs. Borough Clerk Amy L. Boney was asked to obtain a copy of Belmar's proposed e-bike ordinance so Lake Como can consider aligning local rules with Belmar.
