The Florence Mayor and Board voted in executive session to hire Alexis Gooden as a full-time police officer at $21.06 per hour, with an anticipated start date of Oct. 29, 2025, pending a successful background check and drug and alcohol testing. The motion was made in executive session by Alderman John Banks and seconded by Alderman Mason Herrin; roll call showed Banks, Herrin, Kyle Martin and Brent Sistrunk voting aye and Alderman Brian Grantham absent.
Separately during open session the board approved travel and training requests for police and city staff. The board authorized sending Chief Brad Burns to the Winter Educational Conference in Oxford, Mississippi, Dec. 9–12, 2025, with the city paying the $375 registration fee and allowable related costs. The board also approved sending Mark Hester, Chief Burns, David Myers and Tyler Hayes to Sigma Chemical Spill Response training in Pearl, Mississippi on Nov. 6, 2025, with a $135 registration fee each. All motions related to training and travel were recorded as carried unanimously.
