The Florence mayor and board on Aug. 5 approved a series of routine and emergency actions, including payment for emergency water repairs, authorization of a road‑project agreement, and the hiring of a part‑time police officer. Mayor Gunn called the meeting to order at City Hall; Alderman John Banks gave the invocation and the board moved through the consent and new business items with recorded votes on each motion.
Board members unanimously approved invoice M25017‑F for $6,434.15 to address a leaking gate valve at the intersection of Church Street and Main Street to restore water service. The board also approved a $12,243.07 sole‑source rebuild of two submersible pumps at the lift station by Jerry’s Fish House on Hwy. 49 and authorized Mayor Gunn to sign documents for the EAGLE POST ROAD OVERLAY SUPPLEMENTAL AGREEMENT 01, PROJECT NO. STP‑7073‑00(001). In executive session the board voted to hire Hayden Lukens as a part‑time police officer at $20.00 per hour beginning Aug. 11, 2025, pending background and drug/alcohol screening, a motion moved by Alderman Brian Grantham and seconded by Alderman John Banks.
The board approved Budget Amendment #2 for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025, and authorized attendance at the Small‑Town Conference in Philadelphia, MS, with the city covering a $125 registration fee per attendee. Alderman Brian Grantham moved to place a $239 'Good Luck Eagles' ad in the Rankin County News, which the board approved. A resolution supporting the Steens Creek Landing project and related public‑infrastructure investment was also adopted by unanimous recorded vote.
