Orange County Legislature backs state bills on 911 retirement and probation disability coverage

The Orange County Legislature on April 10 adopted two resolutions urging the New York State Legislature and Governor to enact bills affecting emergency personnel and probation officers. Resolution No. 103 supported Senate Bill 7635B and Assembly Bill 9162 to permit an optional 25-year retirement plan for state, county and municipal 911 operators and dispatchers if the local employer elects to provide it. The resolution asserts that communication specialists are first responders who face stressful conditions and should have retirement parity with law enforcement and emergency response personnel.
Resolution No. 104 supported Senate Bill 8837 and Assembly Bill 2535 to permit optional disability coverage for county probation officers injured in the performance of duty; the resolution notes probation officers' exposure to potentially violent populations and the ability of local employers and employee representatives to negotiate costs through collective bargaining. Both resolutions were adopted by voice vote where recorded and direct the Clerk to send certified copies to Gov. Kathy Hochul, local state legislators, and relevant agency heads.
