County funds peer-support coordinator for first responders with opioid settlement money

The Orange County Health and Mental Health Committee on April 21 unanimously approved a $100,914 supplemental appropriation from the New York State Attorney General Opioid Settlement to create and fund an Emergency Services Program Coordinator—First Responder Peer Support Services position for 2026. Legislator Janet Sutherland moved the measure and Jonathan Redeker seconded; the motion carried without opposition.
Sutherland described the role as responsible for “overseeing the Countywide Peer Support Program, ensuring the effective delivery of peer support services to Orange County First Responders and their families, $100,914.00.” Chairperson DeShanda T. Carter said she supported “anything that supports emergency service worker programs because people do not understand the importance of them receiving the help they need,” framing the appropriation as a public-safety and workforce-support investment. The committee recorded the motion as approved with all members voting in favor.
