City signs for $2.5 million state reimbursement for Abernathy waterline project

City staff have taken a key reimbursement step for a major waterline project. The city manager said he signed an invoice today to access $2,500,000 of a previously allocated $5,000,000 state appropriation to help reimburse the city for work on the Abernathy waterline replacement.
"I signed an invoice today for 2,500,000 of that $5,000,000," the city manager said, noting the original $5 million allocation dated to the 2023 legislative session and that accessing the money required coordination among multiple state agencies. Staff said the reimbursement covers a portion of project costs the city financed up front; the project’s total cost has increased since the grant was authorized and the city is paying invoices as work is completed and submitted for reimbursement.
Councilors thanked staff for legislative advocacy and interagency coordination that enabled the reimbursement; staff said they will return with a full survey and cost report and will continue to update council as invoices arrive.
