Advisory committee recommends continuing use of challenged instructional materials; board approves

The superintendent reported that an advisory review committee convened to consider two book challenges and, following the committee's review and public testimonials, unanimously recommended continued use of the materials as currently used with no reservations. "The committee is recommending the 1st choice, which is continued use of the materials as used with no reservations, and that, and that was a unanimous vote by the committee," the superintendent said while presenting the committee report.

Board members discussed parent opt-in versus opt-out approaches, transparency about optional materials and the mechanics of notifying families; some members urged clearer labeling and simpler opt-in/opt-out processes, while others warned that opt-in policies could create slippery slopes for curriculum. After discussion, a motion to approve the advisory committee's recommendation was moved and seconded; a roll-call vote followed and the motion was approved.

The superintendent summarized the committee’s process — committee members attested to reading the materials, convened on February 5 and 10 for review and testimonials, applied three review questions (appropriateness to instructional objectives, level-of-difficulty, age-appropriateness) and then voted. The board asked administrators to improve communication to families about opt-out options and to consider clearer labeling of potentially sensitive materials.
