Council moves consent resolution for ODOT Route 33 widening to full Council

Canal Winchester staff and council voted to forward a resolution giving consent to the Ohio Department of Transportation to carry out a multi-year US Route 33 widening project. The motion to move RES-26-032 to full Council carried unanimously (moved by Moore; seconded by Detwiler).
City staff described the project as taking Route 33 from two lanes to three lanes in the eastbound direction between Gender Road and I‑270 and said the work is expected to begin in the fall of 2027 and last about two years. Matt Peoples cautioned that if the city declined to provide the customary consent, the jurisdiction could assume maintenance responsibility sooner; he explained that the city typically takes maintenance responsibility after ODOT's warranty period expires.
Council members asked questions about potential cost responsibilities for aesthetic or optional features; Amanda Amick raised an example of upgraded fencing the city had previously paid to enhance standard ODOT installations.
