At the public-comment portion of the Town of Clayton meeting, resident Mike Edwards Twining urged the council to petition the N.C. Department of Transportation to evaluate and prioritize widening Business Highway 70 (Clayton Boulevard) in anticipation of new major retail development.
Twining told the council that the planned construction of a Target and a Costco adjacent to the existing Walmart will intensify congestion already experienced along the corridor. He urged the town to seek a timely response from the N.C. Department of Transportation and suggested exploring an encroachment agreement if that provides a faster path to improvements. "Will you, our town council, commit to formally requesting and advocating that the DOT widen this highway before today's congestion becomes tomorrow's gridlock?" he asked. He proposed adding one additional travel lane in each direction from about 900 feet west of Town Center Boulevard to about 700 feet west of the Culver's restaurant.
Mayor Pro Tem thanked Twining for his comments; the item was received as public comment and no formal council action on the widening request was taken at the meeting.
