The commissioners considered an amendment to align the county's mileage reimbursement with the Internal Revenue Service's updated optional standard mileage rate effective July 1, 2026.
Staff proposed updating the county rate to $0.76 per mile (from the prior rate). "The rate will be 76¢ per mile for all business miles in accordance with the recent update of the Internal Revenue Service effective 07/01/2026," the clerk read. Commissioners discussed how often departments actually reimburse mileage — many county employees use county vehicles and mileage reimbursement is limited by preapproval and minimum travel thresholds — and whether the change would materially affect county expenditures.
Staff noted that while the county has an auto fleet of roughly 347 vehicles, many employees have assigned county vehicles; reimbursements primarily apply where employees use personal vehicles for approved business travel. Commissioners requested that departments review how many employees will use the revised rate and return with an estimate before broad application.
