Residents press council to remove Flock license‑plate readers and to install speed bumps in Gateway subdivision

At the July 27 public-comment period, Diane Carol Roy urged the council to remove Flock automated license‑plate reader (ALPR) cameras from Romulus, saying they misread plates, are rarely connected to crimes and can be accessed by outside agencies. "Less than 1% of cars scanned by ALPRS are connected to any crime or wrongdoing," Roy said, and she described incidents elsewhere where misreads led to dangerous police actions and asserted federal agencies had used ALPR data against immigrants.

Multiple Gateway subdivision residents followed with pleas for speed bumps and other traffic-calming measures. Edna Tallon Jamieson said the subdivision will reach about 700 homes and that residents are willing to pay for temporary speed bumps; she described vehicles entering homes and near-misses. "We need those speed bumps," Jamieson said. Willie Martin, Peggy Askew, Charles and others described rollover crashes, knocked-down light poles and close calls; a retired law-enforcement speaker said "speed kills" and urged prompt action. City Attorney Dave Greco said he has been studying approaches used in other Michigan cities and will work with DPW on a permanent plan; the council acknowledged concerns and said staff would continue the process.

No ordinance change or vote on ALPRs or immediate installation of speed bumps occurred at the meeting; the city attorney said he is moving the review forward and council members expressed intent to return the item as unfinished business for follow-up.
