Romulus council adopts resolution to share facts on Wayne County transit millage ahead of Aug. 4 vote

The Romulus City Council voted unanimously July 27 to adopt a resolution authorizing the city to distribute factual information about the Wayne County Public Transportation Millage headed to the Aug. 4 primary ballot.

City Attorney Dave Greco read the proposed resolution, which states the millage will be submitted to Wayne County voters on Aug. 4, 2026, and that the measure would fund public transportation services provided by systems including the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART). "The city council further declares that it takes no position regarding whether electors should vote for or against the proposal," the resolution says. The council approved the resolution on a motion by a council member and a second, with all present members voting yes.

Chief of Staff Julie Waitocho told the council that the packet includes the official ballot language and estimated tax impacts; the resolution notes an example tax impact of about $8 per month on a $200,000 home as presented in the proposal materials. Council members asked clarifying questions about whether Romulus is considered a downriver community and were told Romulus already has SMART service and that, for those downriver communities with existing SMART service, the proposal would be a renewal with no tax-rate increase. "So my through the chair, we are a community that has SMART bus service," Greco said in response to a question.

The resolution directs staff to make factual material available to residents and encourages informed participation in the electoral process. The council did not endorse or oppose the millage and explicitly recorded that it was providing only informational materials. The city attorney said residents should consult official ballot language and election materials for full details.
