Parents urge opt‑out option after disputed classroom reading

"I never asked for the book to be banned or burned. I simply say that I would have liked an opt in or opt out book choice before the book was assigned," Stock told the committee. Brett Bishop, another parent, said he had read the book in full and described the passage in question as seeming included for shock value. Bishop recommended that parents and students be notified in advance and be offered an alternative or the option to skip a section.
Committee members and department representatives acknowledged the concerns and discussed existing district practice that alternative materials are available; they agreed to improve clarity on syllabi and parent communications.
