A committee member moved the recommendation during the meeting and the motion passed 8–0 following public testimony from parents, teachers and library staff.
Committee discussion focused not on removing the book but on improving communication and providing clear alternative materials. During discussion, the committee chair said alternative materials are understood to be available in the district; department representatives agreed to clarify opt‑out procedures in syllabi and in communications sent to families.
"I move that this committee recommend the continued use of the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian as Used with no reservations," a committee member said at the meeting. Parents who testified said they were not seeking a ban but asked for clearer opt‑in/opt‑out procedures and earlier notice when sensitive passages would be read aloud.
The roll call recorded eight yes votes and zero nays. The chair said she would follow up with parents who raised communication concerns and with the superintendent about improving notification practices. The committee adjourned after passing the motion.
