District outlines summer facilities work: new M&O building, classroom modernizations, cameras

Directors of facilities and maintenance presented a year-in-review of capital and maintenance work at the Sept. 9 board meeting. Gary Wichet (director of facilities and logistics) and Cesar Dugo (director of maintenance, operations and transportation) described a new maintenance and operations building at the Mark Richardson Center scheduled to come online in October, parking-area stabilization and erosion control measures, and a completed kitchen-serving counter modernization at Ernest Righetti High. They also described an 8-inch concrete lift installed in a CTE wood shop to support equipment weighing up to 10,000 pounds and a 37-classroom modernization at Santa Maria High that put 19 classrooms online after summer work.
District staff highlighted auxiliary projects: Ethel Pope Auditorium repaint and concrete landings, lead-paint stabilization in a gym, turf and playground cleanups, replacement of decades-old underground valves, Verkada camera replacements coordinated with IT, and an audiovisual upgrade in the PDC. Staff said M&O and site teams moved more than 50 classrooms during renovations and managed logistics so the semester opened on time. Trustees thanked staff for the pace and quality of work and asked technical follow-ups about provider access and project timing.
