Former WESLACO ISD teacher urges board to hold educators accountable

Julianne Valdez Perez identified herself as a former social studies teacher and told the board she resigned after 10 years in the district because of bullying, harassment and retaliation from colleagues.
"After 10 years with the district, I left because of that type of behavior," Valdez Perez said, praising the board's decision to investigate and urging further inquiries into other issues including a vacant elementary coaching position and hiring practices she described as allowing educators with "subpar credentials."
She told trustees "we are educators first" and urged the board to put students first when reviewing personnel matters. Her remarks were part of the public comment portion, during which the board read the Texas Open Meetings Act guidance for commenters.
