Board approves $297,600 roof replacement project at Surry Central High vocational building

Mister Dixon (S8) asked the board to approve replacement of the vocational building roof at Surry Central High School after an EPDM roof was torn off during a windstorm earlier in the year. Staff said the roof received a temporary repair covered in part by insurance (about $85,000) and that DPI performed engineering and prepared a scope of work.
Bids opened July 23 and staff identified AAR Roofing (Kernersville) as the low bidder at $248,000. Because unseen damage may appear when the roof is opened, DPI recommended a 20% contingency ($49,600). Dixon said the district will submit invoices to the insurer after installation to seek additional recovery but that the district will request county commissioners approve $297,600 from repair-and-renovation funds for the replacement. Board members asked whether additional insurance recovery would be possible and noted the close clustering of bids; the board voted to approve the low bid and contingency.
Staff reported $767,000 currently unallocated in R&R funds and a lottery fund balance described in the meeting as a possible funding source if needed.
