Board hears questions about Ocean Park school naming as survey continues

SMMUSD staff said a family survey to name the Ocean Park neighborhood school remains open through July 7 with three options; one board member pressed staff on how the names were selected and whether the full board had adequate dais involvement.
Superintendent Shelton told the board a naming survey for the new Ocean Park neighborhood school was sent to families and closes July 7. "There are 3 names, for families to vote on, and the survey closes on July 7," Shelton said; he listed Ocean Park Community School, Ocean Park Schoolhouse and Ocean Park Lab School and added that, "the name Ocean Park Schoolhouse has the most votes as of this morning."
A board member sought clarity on how the three names were chosen and whether the full board had an opportunity to deliberate. The member said she wanted to see more dais engagement and noted a past agreement to pursue robust community discussion, particularly because of concerns from the SMASH community. Staff explained the names were developed with SMASH staff, the facilities subcommittee, executive cabinet and small focus groups, and that a facilities subcommittee had presented options to the board.
Board members also asked for additional feedback beyond the name—questions about school structure, operations and how the community’s concerns were addressed. District staff said they would provide follow-up emails and details on the process and pledged to share community feedback collected during the survey.
