Staff described why the district split one MOT director role into two positions after a retirement. The maintenance-and-operations director now focuses on grounds, custodial and campus maintenance and serves as a working manager; the transportation manager focuses on fleet management, student transit and certified driver training. Staff said the change yielded lower overtime and more preventive maintenance and estimated the restructure produced about $30,000 in savings.
Staff noted that the transportation manager holds a certified-trainer credential that allows the district to train bus drivers in-house, avoiding contracting costs. The two positions are paid from both general fund (about $150,500) and restricted maintenance funds (about $80,000) in the staff presentation.
