Sheridan County approves nearly $1M airport parking expansion; airport to deploy propane cannons for sandhill cranes

Commissioners voted to award the Sheridan County Airport long-term parking expansion to the low bidder, Wagner Ranch Services LLC, for $992,206 and authorized the chair to execute the notice of award and related contract documents.
"We received four bids," Sheridan County Airport Manager Robert Gillescherding said. "I respectfully recommend awarding the project to the low bidder Wagner Ranch Services with a total bid amount of $992,206." He told the board the bid was below the engineer's estimate and had passed FAA and DOT review.
At the same meeting, Gillescherding told commissioners the airport is seeing an increase in migratory sandhill crane activity and will deploy nonlethal deterrents. "We're seeing flocks of 25 to 40 that are just really hanging around the area," he said, and added that staff will "set out propane cannons" — loud devices run on timers "to help harass them and run them off," he said. He said staff will move the devices periodically and expects them to remain in use for a few weeks.
The airport manager said the project had not been included originally in the airport's capital-improvement budget and that some invoicing may be charged to this fiscal year and covered by airport capital accounts. The board approved the award by voice vote.
