Boyne City DECA students report state competition success, fundraised most trip costs

Students in the Boyne City DECA chapter told the board on March 9 that competing at the state conference offered leadership experience and practical business skills. One team placed first in a role-play and another student reported a second-place overall medal at the competition, which students said included more than 5,000 participants.
"We had the two Braden and Riley'they were in a group of three'and they were up against 52 other teams," the DECA advisor said, describing the field; she added that the students who placed will represent the school in a written event in Georgia. Students emphasized the skills they gained: public speaking, teamwork, and the ability to solve a business problem on the spot. One student said the group fundraised almost all of the trip cost so each student paid roughly $50 out of pocket.
The board applauded the students and staff for organizing travel and chaperones; the board also noted the value of community support and chaperone involvement in enabling the out-of-district competition. DECA advisor Myra Bryant thanked the board for the recognition and credited the state conference experience with boosting students' confidence and professional skills.
