Committee schedules HazMat IQ, CST radiation training and local disaster exercises

Committee members reviewed upcoming drills and training opportunities for first responders across Elko County.
Chief Johnston reported two specific events: a HazMat IQ class tentatively scheduled for March 27–28 funded through SERC (location confirmation pending) and a Combined Special Teams (CST) training May 27–28 with emphasis on radiation response. “March 27–28, and I’ll get more information... and the other is our May CST training... that’ll be May 27th and 28th, with the emphasis on RAD,” Chief Johnston said, and added he would circulate invites when details were finalized.
Jamie Carlson of Great Basin College said the college’s annual disaster exercise is set for April 24 and invited broader participation. Cammie Kinkade, the county’s rural and frontier coordinator for OEM, also urged members to consider conferences including the Rural Preparedness Summit in Elko (June 10–12), the Wildland-Urban Interface conference in Reno (March 24–26), and the National VOAD conference in Reno in May.
