After hearing hours of testimony, the council voted to send a proposed repeal of the city's fluoridation ordinance to the Judiciary & Ordinance (J&O) committee for formal review.
Ald. (speaker 8) made the motion to refer the matter to J&O and another member seconded; the clerk recorded a 5–4 result. Mayor clarified that any change to the city's fluoridation practice requires ordinance revision, committee consideration and another public hearing limited to city residents. Staff told the council the committee process and the subsequent public hearing would likely take several weeks.
Council members who supported referral said the committee review would allow more time to evaluate evidence, draft ordinance language and set hearing notices; members opposed to the referral said they trusted public‑health professionals and were inclined to retain fluoridation. The committee referral does not change the current practice: fluoride will remain in the water until any ordinance change is finally approved and implemented.
