Development group asks Sunman to partner on redevelopment, proposes $72,000 consultant contract

Wayne Jenner, a member of the Southeastern Indiana Development Corporation, told the Sunman Town Board that citizens and businesses pooled funds years ago to buy about 40 acres south of town and that the local development group now wants to work more closely with municipal leaders to spur business and housing development. “For a year of consulting work with them, we're looking at about $72,000,” Jenner said.
Jenner described the corporation's mission as encouraging new industry, rehabilitating existing businesses and advancing housing goals from the town's comprehensive plan, including affordable and senior housing. He recommended hiring Civetas, a strategic-planning firm in Indianapolis, to help prepare sites, identify developers and pursue grant and financing options. Jenner said the development group would contribute money but asked whether the town would consider co-funding or otherwise working with the group on a redevelopment-economic commission with appointed members and a nonvoting school representative.
Board members pressed on next steps, funding channels and utility availability. The board indicated it will take up a draft ordinance later in the agenda to create a redevelopment commission and consider moving the proposal to first reading at the next meeting. No formal town contribution amount was recorded in the meeting minutes.
