Jeff Duvall, director of the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management, told the Springs Municipal Advisory Council that seasonal outlooks point to an earlier, warmer and drier summer that will extend the wildfire season. He described county preparations including a multi-agency Emergency Operations Center activation in early June and two-day simulation exercises for EOC staff.
Duvall emphasized individual preparedness and community resources, saying, “Preparedness starts it doesn't matter what we do as a department of emergency management.” He listed official information channels — socoemergency.org and 211 — and encouraged residents to prepare personal emergency kits, know evacuation zones and consider CERT training. The county plans to distribute eVac packs at community events, with a first-come allocation noted for an upcoming outreach event.
Why it matters: county officials expect warmer, drier conditions that increase wildfire risk and lengthen the fire season. Duvall said the EOC exercises are intended to test updated plans and coordination among fire, law enforcement, shelter and communications teams.
Council follow-up: members asked about bilingual materials and distributing preparedness packs at local events; Duvall confirmed materials and backpacks will be provided and that CERT training will be offered in hybrid format with a local skill-day in Sonoma Valley.
