Residents, museum backers clash in public comments over proposed courthouse museum lease

Jim Popham, who identified himself as working with the museum effort, urged the board to reopen the facility and accept donations, saying, "We've filed with the state and we're ready to accept donations and open back ups." He told commissioners the group had formed an LLC and secured 501(c)(3) status and that most items have documentation and ownership transfers.
Several other speakers opposed the lease. Sandra Washington said the new entity retained the same board members as the prior organization and had not demonstrated readiness or insurance, telling the board, "They have never acknowledged there was no preparation to leave by the original May 15 deadline, no plan to return items to families, no plan to store or protect those precious treasures." Susan Bowie echoed concerns that governance and legal filings remained insufficient and urged the board to deny the lease request to avoid mismanaging public facilities.
Laurie Raul and Frank Wynne, who spoke in support of the museum's new leadership, urged the commissioners to work with the group, argue for more time, and place the matter on an agenda for fuller discussion. Raul said the community has shown "strong numbers" supporting the museum and asked the board to collaborate rather than evict. Wynne said documentation had been transferred to DC Museum and that "everything, all the assets have been transferred over to DC museum."
The chair thanked commenters and moved the meeting to its next agenda items; no formal lease decision was recorded during the work session.
