Fort Edward board votes to oppose closure of Great Meadow Correctional Facility

The resolution, moved by Councilwoman Collier and seconded by Councilwoman Mullen, lists estimated employment of about 560 and a facility capacity of 1,595 inmates, and cites nearly $200 million in capital improvements over the past five years as a reason to reconsider the closure.
The resolution also highlighted specialized treatment capacity at Great Meadow, including Behavioral Health Unit and Intermediate Care Program beds, and warned of regional economic impacts on local municipalities and school districts. The board voted 4–0 in favor with Councilman Middleton absent, and directed that copies be sent to Governor Hochul, regional legislators and members of the NYS Commission of Corrections.
