Officials say homeowners have lost policies; board presses for parcel-level risk maps

Commissioners raised concerns that homeowners are being dropped from insurance policies because of wildfire risk. One commissioner asked directly, "Have any homeowners been dropped in our area?" and said his estimate was "Hundreds." The Chief confirmed that properties in the City of Elko and in Wells have experienced policy drops and said the challenge is the lack of a common mapping dataset that insurers and reinsurers use to see fuels-reduction work.
The Chief recommended developing parcel- and community-level risk maps to show insurers where mitigation has occurred and to persuade reinsurers and carriers to use consistent datasets. He noted that ISO and carrier mapping vary and that presenting localized data could help bring insurers back to affected communities.
