Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staley summarized his office’s budget pressures and steps taken to mitigate costs during the Aug. 3 workshop. Staley said the county’s participation in a Prime Correctional program "has saved you $7,095,218," noting the sheriff’s office has also negotiated large health-insurance increases down to roughly 22% and budgeted $15,057 per employee in next year’s proposal.
Staley listed several grants that reduce local taxpayer costs, including a $2.4 million grant to replace portable radios and a pending $1 million grant to upgrade the CAD system. He asked the board to approve four positions he requested and offered to decide internally which of his agency’s positions would remain unfunded if cuts are required, telling the board he would not eliminate deputies who respond to calls.
