Edison council adopts 2026 budget after tense public hearing

The Edison Township Council adopted its 2026 calendar-year municipal budget following a public hearing and final roll call vote on Aug. 3, 2026. The clerk recorded a 6–1 vote: Brasher voted no; the remaining six members voted in favor, and Council President Coyle declared, “Budget approved.”
The council first voted to accept Department of Community Affairs (DCA) amendments, which staff and legal counsel said were necessary technical corrections. That approval cleared the way for the public hearing on the budget as amended. Residents who spoke during the hearing pressed for line-item clarity on $5 million shown as a utility operating surplus, the roughly $25 million of proposed bonding and the accounting for a new full-day summer camp program. Finance staff answered that the $5 million surplus is sewer-utility revenue and that most bonding would fund streets and public‑works projects.
Councilman Bresher proposed an amendment to trim $300,000 from the fuel line, but the motion failed for lack of a second and counsel warned a cut of that size would trigger a required re-notice and further review by DCA before adoption. After final council discussion the clerk called the roll and the budget passed. The administration said the tax-impact adjustments reflected in estimated August tax bills will appear in the November tax quarter schedule for property owners.
