County engineer outlines $342,000 pavement-preservation work on 9.5-mile stretch

Mitchell County's county engineer (Rich) briefed the board on an upcoming pavement-preservation program that will begin with crack and joint repairs in a "blast-and-go" process and includes overbanding of joint sealant. He said the initial project would focus on roughly 9.5 miles of roadway between Stacyville and McIntyre and that the county has a quote for about $342,000 for the work.
Rich explained the technique produces a checkerboard appearance during the initial season because it overbands joints with sealant, and said over time the appearance will wear down under plows and traffic. He indicated the work is maintenance-driven to extend pavement life and that the county will work through the annual maintenance budget; some projects might be amended into the spring budget depending on progress and remaining funds.
The engineer also said a box culvert replacement tied to related paving may be delayed because the box culvert is not covered by the grant and may require reevaluation. A consultant has located older plans that may clarify whether the culvert can be repaired without pavement removal; the county does not currently have it posted as a restricted location.
