Police chief reports vacancies, three contingent offers; cameras installed but require budget amendment

Calvin Williams, Richmond Heights police chief, told the council on July 30 that the department currently has 21 full‑time officers and two part‑time officers and is budgeted for 26 full‑time positions and two part‑time positions. He said contingent offers have been made to three candidates.
"The Richmond Heights Police Department currently has 21 full time police officers and two part-time officers. We are budgeted for 26 full-time police officers and two part-time officers. We have given contingent offers to three candidates," Williams said.
Williams also described a recent tour of Belle Oaks as part of evaluating a potential police substation. He reported that a vendor has been installing a new camera system in three municipal buildings over the past several weeks and that camera equipment is being installed in city parks as well.
Finance Director Travian Atkins told council the camera project was not in the presented budget and that a budget amendment will be required to cover the expense. Atkins also said the city hopes to complete its state audit by Aug. 15.
The council did not take formal action on police staffing or camera purchases at this meeting; Atkins’ statement indicates staff will prepare a budget amendment for future council consideration.
