Adams County approves sublease to open Head Start center at Greyhound Park

The Adams County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a sublease agreement that will allow a new Head Start Early Childhood Education Center to operate at Greyhound Park in The Landing.
Nikki Beaupre, representing Facilities and Fleet Management, described the site as approximately 2,100 square feet of interior classroom and staff space with a roughly 3,000-square-foot outdoor playground for a total of about 3,500 square feet. "The lease is a gross sublease with the nominal $1 a month rent," Beaupre said, and staff noted an initial five-year term with options to extend to 2043. Beaupre also said the board had approved a $2,500,000 construction project for the site.
Eddie Valdez, division director over operations and community connections in Human Services, said the center will open with two classrooms serving 32 Head Start students when the 2026-27 school year begins on Aug. 18. "We are excited to welcome families into this new location and continue serving the Commerce City community with this vital service," Valdez said.
Commissioners praised the public-private partnership behind the project. Commissioner Henson said she would support the resolution and highlighted the cross-agency effort. Commissioner Baca thanked Del West and individual partners, citing the project as an example of development that "meets a need that's needed in community." Commissioner O'Dorisio highlighted the county's continued support for Head Start.
The board moved to approve the resolution; the motion was seconded as recorded and the Chair announced the motion passed.
Next steps include finalizing construction contracts and preparing the facility for the planned Aug. 18 opening, subject to typical permitting and funding contingencies.
