Council approves $1M emergency appropriation for training center, fire station repairs

The Mishawaka Common Council on Aug. 3 approved Proposed Ordinance 2026-26, declaring an emergency and authorizing a $1,000,000 expenditure split between County Economic Development Income Tax ($500,000) and Public Safety local income tax ($500,000). The Budget & Finance committee reported the ordinance should be adopted and the council accepted the committee report before the public hearing and vote.
City Controller Rebecca McGuire told the council she was requesting the $500,000 additional appropriation in the ceded fund to support training center improvements and described plans to build a training center on the 5th Street property "which will assist both the fire department and the police department in their training endeavors." McGuire also said the public safety funds will address mold found at Fire Station 1, covering HVAC replacement, mold remediation, and temporary housing. A council member questioned living arrangements and learned McGuire expects a trailer to house a three-person shift while remediation proceeds. The ordinance passed on council poll.
