The Wythe County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Resolution 2026-20 on July 28 authorizing county staff to apply for Wythe-Bland Foundation grant funding to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for county-owned athletic facilities.
Deputy County Administrator Matthew C. Hankins told the board that a new state law requires AEDs at athletic facilities and that the foundation grant would help the county meet the mandate without an immediate local appropriation. "The placement of AEDs at these facilities will improve emergency response capabilities and enhance public safety for participants, spectators, coaches, volunteers, and staff," the resolution states. The resolution directs staff to prepare and submit the grant application and noted that if grant funding is not awarded, county funds would need to be budgeted in a future fiscal year.
Supervisor Stacy A. Terry moved to accept the resolution and the motion passed unanimously. Staff will prepare the grant application and return with results and recommended appropriations if required.
