Council advances two Belgrade Avenue medallion designs after public outreach

After a public outreach effort, the North Mankato City Council on July 20 directed staff to forward two decorative medallion concepts for Belgrade Avenue to a professional artist for refinement.
City Planner Lassonde reviewed the engagement: "The public survey was available from June 25 through July 8 and received 115 responses, including 98 from North Mankato residents," Lassonde said. Residents rated four shortlisted submissions on a five-point scale; Submission 1 averaged 3.3, Submission 2 averaged 3.1, Submission 3 averaged 3.0, and Submission 4 averaged 2.8. The survey also asked whether to proceed with existing submissions or hire a new artist; 69.4% of the 98 resident respondents supported moving forward with the submitted designs.
Council members discussed whether to forward a single design or multiple concepts, whether designs represented the corridor or the city as a whole, and whether original submitters could complete final artwork. After discussion, the council decided that Designs 1 and 2 should go to a professional artist for final rendering.
