Resident challenges citation after storm; commissioners describe limited road resources

A Cusseta resident raised concerns at the Oct. 1 meeting about a warning for dirt that washed from her driveway onto Massey Road after heavy rain.
JD Abercrombie, speaking on Teresa Parrish’s behalf, said crews had cleared the sand and questioned why citations were issued on Sept. 13 during a heavy rain event. He said work orders for Patterson Road were not completed for ten days after he filed them. “We cleaned it up with no shovels,” Abercrombie said, and asked how many other driveways received citations that same day.
County Manager Thomas Weaver said the county issued warnings to about ten driveways on that date and that warnings are the formal system the county uses to notify residents of problems discovered after storms. Chairman Charles Coffey told the meeting “a warning is a courtesy and we do not have to give them. We can write someone a citation on the spot,” and emphasized staff do what they can with limited resources.
Commissioner Jason Frost noted the motor grader was in repair recently and the county has only one grader, which affects the speed of repairs. Weaver said the county prioritizes making roads passable immediately after storms and returns later to complete repairs as resources permit.
The board did not take formal action on the complaint during the meeting; commissioners reiterated the county’s current practice of issuing warnings and resolving road issues as resources allow.
