Board reconsiders consent to separate emergency resolution after abstentions

Boardmembers Alicia and Laurie moved to reconsider the previously approved consent agenda to allow item 3I, an emergency resolution requiring a 4/5 vote, to be separated and voted on independently. The motion to reconsider passed on recorded roll call.

"Madam chair, item 3I, which is on our consent agenda, is an emergency resolution which requires a 4/5th vote of our board of education. Because both Maria and I abstained in the whole of the vote, it means we were not able to get to that 4/5th requirement for 3I," a board member explained during the motion. The motion to reconsider was moved by Alicia and seconded by Laurie; the board then voted to remove the emergency item and reapprove the remainder of the consent agenda.

Separately, several members recorded abstentions on the consent agenda citing employment with Santa Monica College. The board recorded roll-call votes for the reconsideration motion and for reapproval of the consent items with the emergency resolution removed; the emergency item was set for separate consideration. Parliamentary points about who may recall an item to discussion were clarified during the meeting.
