District hires independent reviewer for elementary athletic-field surfaces; CEQA plan in place

Dr. Shelton told the board that the district has approved a campus plan for Franklin Elementary under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and is conducting further research into athletic-field surfaces.
"At the May 30 at the May 15 Board of Education meeting, the board approved the campus plan and California Environmental Quality Act, which we call CEQA," Dr. Shelton said. He added that in response to community feedback the board directed staff to further investigate both natural grass and synthetic turf options for instructional play fields.
The district has retained an independent third-party environmental firm to review relevant documents, data and community concerns. "Their findings will be delivered to the board in mid fall," Dr. Shelton said. The superintendent framed this as part of a broader process to gather information, seek community input and return to the board before final design and construction decisions.
