On third and final reading the board adopted an ordinance to rezone 1401 Dudley Street from Office Quiet to C1 General Commercial to permit a funeral-home office use.
Jamie, planning staff, said the property — a former dentist office adjacent to Dollar General — is in a C3 area and that the executor of the decedent property owner requested rezoning. Jamie told the board 21 notices were mailed and no formal opposition was received. Gary Davis, the prospective purchaser, addressed the board: “I'm the person purchasing the property to open another funeral home here in Texarkana,” and said the building will be used mainly as an office and that extensive renovations are needed before operations begin.
The board conducted the required three readings and adopted the ordinance. Staff said a separate process and permits are required for funeral services and for any crematory facilities, which are governed by different zoning and permitting rules.
