PSJA public commenters press board to prioritize lowest‑paid staff in raises
Summary
During public comment at a PSJA budget workshop, union and teacher speakers urged the board to adopt tiered pay increases that give larger percentage raises to hourly and lower‑paid staff instead of a uniform percentage across all employees.

Multiple community members used the district’s budget workshop to ask trustees to shift the district’s pay approach toward equity. Christina Young, speaking for PSJA AFT, told the board: “Do not approve the same percentage increase for every employee,” arguing a uniform percentage widens pay disparities because a 3% raise affects someone earning $18–20 an hour differently than an executive earning more than $100,000.
Several teachers who spoke later echoed the request for targeted decisions and more meaningful consultation with employee organizations before final budget decisions. Maria Quintanilla asked for clearer processes that allow stakeholders to review information before being asked to comment, and CTE educators flagged gaps between district spending decisions and classroom operational needs (basic supplies, trip supervision). Trustees acknowledged those concerns and asked administration to provide additional reports and to hold follow‑up budget workshops to permit deeper review before adoption.
