Commissioners approve sending MDOC CDBG exception letter to pursue growth-policy grant

Commissioners voted on Aug. 20 to authorize staff to sign a letter requesting an exception from the Montana Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant (MDOC CDBG) program so the county can submit an application for a planning grant to update the growth policy.
"This grant would be due Nov. 1, I'd like to send them that letter even if the else club does not get their grant just so we can start moving forward with this application," staff member Kristen said, urging moving forward while other funding sources are being pursued.
Commissioner Turner moved to sign the letter; a second was made and the motion carried. Kristen told commissioners the county already has an open application under review related to another organization and that MDOC will grant exceptions in some cases. She said the county will not rely on this single grant and that other funding sources will be combined to complete the growth-policy update.
Why it matters: Updating the county's growth policy guides long-term planning and development decisions. Pursuing the MDOC CDBG planning grant would provide part of the funding needed for a comprehensive update and associated public engagement.
