A youth-led candidate forum held in Avalon on the eve of the June 2 election gave council and mayoral candidates brief, structured opportunities to present their priorities and answer questions from high-school delegates. Paul Burchall, community library manager at Avalon Library, opened the forum and framed it as a collaboration with the YMCA of Greater Long Beach; Stephanie Rodriguez, Avalon Youth & Government delegation president, served as chair and moderator.
Candidates highlighted diverging emphases but hit shared themes: balancing tourism and environment, addressing a housing shortage exacerbated by short-term rentals, restoring community trust with county sheriff personnel, and expanding youth opportunities. “This forum is organized, moderated, and facilitated by high school delegates from the Avalon YMCA youth and government program,” Paul Burchall said in opening remarks. Organizers and candidates repeatedly urged civil discourse and reminded attendees to vote; the moderators closed by telling the audience the polling place is Saint Catherine’s Church and that mail voting is available.
