Forest Service announces Rhodes End paving and mid-September culvert replacement that will close canyon to traffic for about a week

The Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest Service said it has a contractor lined up to pave the Rhodes End parking lot after July 4 and will bid and replace a failed culvert above the Boy Scout camp with funding from disaster-relief/IRA sources; traffic will be closed for about a week during the culvert work, though trails will remain open.
Josh Nichols, district ranger for the Forest Service, told the commission that the agency has contracts in place for several projects, including paving at Rhodes End and a culvert-replacement project funded through disaster-relief/IRA funds.
"We're moving forward with that. We have a contractor and we're targeting a start date of after the week of the July 4," Nichols said of the Rhodes End parking-lot paving; the contract allows the contractor 30 days to complete the work. He also said the agency has secured additional funding to replace a failed culvert above the Boy Scout camp and is coordinating with Elko County to put the contract out to bid in April with a target mid-September start. Nichols warned that the culvert work will necessitate a temporary closure of the road to traffic but said the trail system will remain open to nonmotorized users.
When asked about duration, Nichols estimated the traffic closure would be about a week. The ranger said the agency will publicize timing and access changes in advance to allow residents and recreationists time to plan. The commission did not take a formal vote on the Forest Service items during the update.
