Mayor Robert McKee and town staff opened the meeting Aug. 3 with a proclamation and a moment of silence for Randolph “RJ” Jones, who intervened in a downtown road‑rage incident on July 10 and later died this past weekend. Staff and council described Jones as a longtime town employee and pastor who stepped into a dangerous situation to calm others; the council presented a flag and other tokens to his family.
Miss Story, speaking for town staff, said, “Randolph Jones, better known to us here at the town hall as RJ, had done something extraordinary on July 10, and we wanted the chance to stand up here and tell him and all of you just how proud and thankful we are of him.” Mayor Robert McKee read a proclamation that praised Jones’s “courageous and selfless actions” and said the town “extends our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude.” The council recessed briefly so the Jones family could exit the meeting room without disruption.
Why this matters: The recognition puts a formal record in the town minutes and directs the town and community to acknowledge the safety risk Jones faced while performing municipal duties. Officials did not take additional formal action during the remembrance beyond the proclamation and presentation.
